PEGs are not considered to be irritants or sensitizers, and are CIR and FDA approved for use, but not on broken skin. The CIR has found that PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is safe for use in concentrations of up to 100% without causing irritation, although it has been shown to increase the sensitization potential of other ingredients. It's molecular weight of 40 means that it is minimally absorbed by the skin.

Despite the many fears regarding PEGs, they are seen as an ingredient in a large number of products because of their diverse properties. In a study published in the Toxicology journal in 2005, entitled "Safety assessment on polyethylene glycols (PEGs) and their derivatives as used in cosmetic products," it was concluded that: "Taking into consideration all available information from related compounds, as well as the mode and mechanism of action, no safety concern with regard to these endpoints could be identified. Based on the available data it is therefore concluded that PEGs of a wide molecular weight range (200 to over 10,000), their ethers (laureths, ceteths, ceteareths, steareths, and oleths), and fatty acid esters (laurates, dilaurates, stearates, distearates) are safe for use in cosmetics."

Hydrogenated castor oil, also known as castor wax, is a hardened vegetable wax produced from pure castor oil through the chemical process of hydrogenation. When hydrogen is introduced to pure castor oil in the presence of a nickel catalyst, the resulting product becomes waxy, highly viscous, and more saturated.

Hydrogenated castor oil is an ingredient prevalently found in many cosmetics, varnishes, and polishes. You most likely use it on a daily basis. Unlike pure castor oil, which is said to have a slightly offensive smell, it is completely odorless. Hydrogenated castor oil is also insoluble in water.

But why hydrogenate castor oil when the pure oil works so well for so many different applications? What is the purpose of hydrogenating castor oil, exactly?

Hydrogenated Castor Oil Uses?

 

The purpose of the hydrogenation process is to improve castor oil’s melting point, texture, odor, and shelf-life.

Once hydrogenated, the resulting castor oil product is comprised of hard, brittle flakes. Hydrogenated castor oil is considered an organic ingredient, as well as a vegan one, as it is vegetable-derived.

One application of hydrogenated castor oil is to improve certain cosmetic products. You can add the flakes to cosmetic formulations until thoroughly melted. In this capacity, hydrogenated castor oil acts as an emollient and a thickener; increasing the viscosity of creams, ointments, and lotions when their composition is too runny.

 

Hydrogenated castor oil also stabilizes cosmetics that come in stick-form (like lipstick) and increases these products’ melting points, making for a more stable product. In part thanks to hydrogenated castor oil, it’s not the end of the world if we leave a tube of red lipstick in a hot car! Hydrogenated castor oil means our lipsticks maintain a solid structure even when they’re pushed to the limit, and our deodorant doesn’t crumble as we apply it.

• If a bubble is subjected to mechanical agitation, bubbles caused by entrained air, would form very stable lamellar structures
• The Marangoni effect is a major stabilizing factor in foam, and is driven by osmotic pressure
• The aqueous liquid is being pulled through the bubbles'' walls creating regions of low and high surfactant concentrations, which sets up a gradient along the bubbles'' surface
• The gradient would pump liquid back onto the bubble walls, where this phenomenon is referred to as a surface transport
• The bulk viscosity also contributed to foam stability
• As the viscosity of liquids increase, entrained air can be trapped in bubble below the liquid''s surface
• With the increasing viscosity of the system, the coalescence capability of smaller bubbles merging to become larger bubbles also reduces
• If the bubbles become large enough (increasing the diameter), bubble stability decreases.

Citronella oil is used in small amounts to flavor foods, scent cosmetics, and repel insects. It has been used in aromatic tea as a vermifuge, diuretic, and antispasmodic although no clinical trials have been performed.
Chemistry

Citronella oil contains a number of fragrant fractions of which citronellal, geraniol, and citronellol are the major components. 3 , 5 Gas chromatographic analysis of the Ceylon variety indicates that the oil contains large amounts of monoterpenes (approximately 27%), as opposed to the Java variety, which contains only 1% to 3%, mostly in the form of limonene. 1 Both types contain comparable amounts of geraniol (18% to 21%). The Java oil is superior to the Ceylon type; the Java variety contains 16% citronellol and 33% citronellal, whereas the Ceylon type contains only 8% and 5%, respectively. 1 The chemical composition of essential oil can vary tremendously. What is Citronella Essential Oil?

Citronella is a grass that mainly grows in some Asian countries and some islands of the South Pacific. It has a rich, crisp lemony aroma and thus bears the name citronella. The essential oil of citronella is extracted from two varieties of citronella. The first one is the Ceylon variety, whose scientific name isCymbopogon nardus and the second one is Java variety, called Cymbopogon winterianus in botanical terminology. In both cases, the essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the fresh plant.
