Behentrimonium Methosulfate or BTMS is a vegetable based conditioning emulsifier. It can be used to emulsify lotions and scrubs but is more commonly used to make hair conditioners. The recommended usage rate is 1 – 15% though we find that much more than 6% in our hair conditioner recipes is overkill. This emulsifying system contains a large percentage of conditioning agents, making it appropriate for leave-on conditioning treatments as well as traditional rinse off hair care. This product contains no hazardous solvents and comes in an easy-to-work-with white pastille. Behentrimonium Methosulfate is a quaternary ammonium salt derived from the natural plant oil Colza, or what is commonly known as Rapeseed Oil. It is both a mild primary emulsifier and an effective conditioning agent, which provides elegant cationic emulsions for both skin and hair care products. These emulsions leave hair tangle-free and feeling silky smooth and provide skin with a softer, powdery feel after use in skin products such as lotions and creams. BTMS-50 is also capable of emulsifying silicone, adding to its range in hair care products. Our favorite hair conditioner recipe, using BTMS.
Properties Of Behentrimonium Methosulfate:
BTMS is a very mild conditioning agent that provides slip and helps with detangling your hair. A big plus is that it is also an emulsifier, meaning it prevents the separation of water and oils in the recipe. Adding BTMS to your own mixes, like the leave in, or any homemade natural product for that matter, enhances the smoothing properties of the product.
How I Use BTMS:
I actually add BTMS to more than just my leave in conditioner. I have added it to my shea butter mix from time to time. Since it’s so mild it can be used in lotions as well, but I have yet to try that. As always, do your own research to make sure you fully understand what it is and what it isn’t. I love making and using my very own leave in conditioner with Behentrimonium Methosulfate. If you’re into being a Mixtress, go ahead and give this recipe a go.

Carbomer 940 is a polyvinyl carboxy polymer used as a viscosityenhancer, gelling agent, or suspension agent. Carbomer 940 is cross linked with ethers of , and is used primarily in systems where sparkling clarity or a sharp viscosity response is required. Carbomer 940 will impart unbelievalbe softness and glide, comparable to the glycols, when added to your formulations. Carbomer 940 can be used to thicken surfactant systems, and to create suspension products and is excellent when you need to suspend heavy particles. Viscosity actually has nothing to do with the ability of a product to suspend items such as jojoba beads or capispheres. For instance, a shower gel as thick as jello will allow the beads to either sink or rise …while a water thin product that contains Carbomer can suspend ball bearings. This is because the Carbomer forms a “Network” that suspends the beads very effectively. Carbomer 940 can also be used to create gel products very easily and cost effectively and Carbomer viscosity stands up to the incorporation of different fragrance and essential oils much better than standard surfactant thickeners. When surfactant thickeners are used, fragrance and essential oils can get into the middle of the micellar structure of the gel formed and interfere with it to have a dramatic effect on surfactant systems. By contrast, the network created by Carbomer 940 is not influenced in this way.

Dimethicone in its simplest form is polydimethylsiloxane, also known as silicone oil, but more commonly called dimethicone. Silicone oils are derived from silica (sand and quartz are silicas). Dimethicone comes in various viscosities, ours is 350 centistokes, a medium thick viscosity which offers excellent barrier properties when used in skin protectant formulations. It adds slip and glide, reducing tackiness. It offers conditioning properties when used in hair and skin care applications. This oil-soluble silicone is an excellent cosmetic ingredient for skin care and hair care applications, with a wide variety of uses. It offers natural lubrication, adding more slip and glide to cosmetics, reducing tackiness on the skin and a sticky feeling in hair, improving hair’s softness and reduces frizziness even in high humidity. Dimethicone 350 also helps to create a protective barrier on the skin, helping to protect it from harsh outside elements such as heat, sun damage and cold winds, as well as things such as free radicals. As this silicone possesses natural emolliency, it is an excellent addition to cosmetics such as conditioners, lotions and moisturisers as well as other leave-on and rinse-off applications. With a thicker viscosity, Dimethicone 350 creates a stronger, more protective barrier than ingredients such as Dimethicone 1000. Often added at the oil phase of a cosmetic formulation. One of the most widely used ingredients in cosmetics, dimethicone works as an anti-foaming agent, skin protectant and skin & hair conditioner- it prevents water loss by forming a hydrating barrier on the skin. Like most silicones, this ingredient has a unique fluidity that makes it easily spreadable. It adds slip and glide, reducing tackiness. When applied to the skin, its known for creating a subtle gloss that feels smooth and silky to touch. It also acts a mild water repellent by forming a protective barrier on the skin, and can fill in fine lines/wrinkles on the face, giving it a temporary “plump” look. It offers conditioning properties when used in hair and skin care applications.

For people with curly hair, silicones elicit many emotions. For some, they are a holy grail ingredient, while others shy away from them for fear they will dry out their hair.It is evident that there exists a considerable amount of confusion in the curly community in regard to whether silicones are good for curly hair and compatible with shampoo free hair care routines. In this column, we'll take a look at amodimethicone and other similar molecules, such as bis-aminopropyl dimethicone and trimethyl silylamodimethicone. And we'll talk about the pros and cons of using them, especially if you shy away from sulfates. These are being used more often by chemists as conditioning agents in hair product formulations. They are popular because of their ease of use in processing and manufacturing products as well as for their many benefits to the hair. Amodimethicone is an abbreviation of “amine-functionalized silicone,” which is a family of silicones modified to have specific properties. The simplest, and perhaps most well-known silicone, polydimethylsiloxane (dimethicone, by INCI naming standards), consists of methyl groups (-CH3) as the pendant group along the backbone of the polymer chain (Figure 1). Amine-functionalized silicones have been chemically modified so that some of the pendant groups along the backbone have been replaced with various alkylamine groups (-R-NH2). These amine groups become positively charged in aqueous solutions because of their electron-donating (basic) tendencies, yielding an inorganic, cationic polymer. Amodimethicone and other similarly modified silicone polymers are considered to be among the best high-performance conditioning polymers currently available to the hair-care product formulator.
They provide many unique benefits, including the following:
These modified silicones seem to be of particular benefit for those of us with damaged hair, permanently colored hair or those concerned about the buildup of conditioning agents. It would be necessary to use a shampoo containing one of the lauryl or laureth sulfates or cocamidopropyl betaine to completely remove this silicone from the hair, which may be of concern to those who prefer to use only conditioner-cleansing methods.
These inorganic cationic polymers deposit onto the hair because of the electrostatic attraction between the polymer and the negatively-charged protein surface of the cuticle. In this manner, they behave much like polyquaternium materials (organic cationic polymers), which are excellent conditioning agents as well. The charge density of the polymer can be varied by changing the placement and quantity of the amine groups. A polymer with greater charge density will be more substantive to the hair than one with lesser charge density. One interesting property of these polymers is that they provide selective conditioning to the areas most in need of it. The mechanism by which they accomplish this is, again, electrostatic attraction. Highly damaged areas of the hair cuticle possess higher negative charge density, which enhances the affinity of the cationic polymer to that specific area. These polymers can provide a targeted beneficial effect.

Caprylic triglyceride is an ingredient used in soaps and cosmetics. It’s usually made from combining coconut oil with glycerin. This ingredient is sometimes called capric triglyceride. It’s also sometimes mistakenly called fractionated coconut oil.
Caprylic triglyceride has been widely used for more than 50 years. It helps smooth skin and works as an antioxidant. It also binds other ingredients together, and can work as a preservative of sorts to make the active ingredients in cosmetics last longer.
Caprylic triglyceride is valued as a more natural alternative to other synthetic chemicals found in topical skin products. Companies that claim that their products are “all natural” or “organic” often contain caprylic triglyceride.
While it’s technically made of natural components, the caprylic triglyceride used in products isn’t usually found in nature. A chemical process separates the oily liquid so that a “pure” version of it can be added to products.
Caprylic/capric triglyceride benefitsCaprylic triglycerides are compounds made of naturally occurring fatty acids. They’re a clear liquid and slightly sweet to the taste. The high fat content in triglycerides, along with their texture and antioxidant qualities, make them of particular use for soap and skin care products.
EmollientEmollients are ingredients that soften your skin. Emollients work by trapping moisture in your skin and forming a protective layer so the moisture can’t escape. Caprylic triglyceride is an effective skin-softening ingredient.
Dispersing agentDispersing agents are the parts of any chemical or organic compound that hold the ingredients together and stabilize them.
Mixing other active ingredients, pigments, or scents in a good dispersing agent keeps the ingredients from clumping together or sinking to the bottom of the mixture. The waxy and thick consistency of caprylic triglycerides make them an excellent dispersing agent.
SolventSolvents are ingredients that can dissolve, or break apart, certain ingredients or compounds. Ingredients are solvents based on how their molecules are structured and shaped, and how they interact with other substances.
Caprylic triglyceride can dissolve compounds that are designed to clump together. While some solvents have toxic ingredients, caprylic triglyceride doesn’t carry those risks.
AntioxidantAntioxidants work to neutralize toxins you’re exposed to every day in your environment. Antioxidants stop the chain reaction called oxidation, which can age your skin and take a toll on your body.
Caprylic triglyceride is full of antioxidants that help preserve your skin and help you feel younger.

“Activated charcoal” is similar to common charcoal but is subject to a steam process to increase the internal spaces or “pores,” in order to maximize the charcoal’s ability to trap toxic chemicals. Activated charcoal can be made from coal, wood, coconut shells, petroleum, or bamboo. The wildcrafted bamboo form tests as the best source in my practice both clinically and energetically.
The many gaps or pores in Activated Bamboo Charcoal, or “BODAR INDUSTRIES,” make it ideal for adsorption and detoxification. Taken before bed in a little water this powder can bind endotoxins (large molecules of gram negative bacteria cell membranes) and other pathogenic bacteria, yeasts, and molds; excess ammonia in the blood from liver dysfunction; exogenous toxic chemicals such as glyphosate and other insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides; heavy metals from toxic dental fillings and crowns; pharmaceutical and recreational drugs; and a myriad of other neurotoxic molecules generated in the body from chronic gut dysbiosis, insulin resistance, aberrant liver metabolic pathways, and impaired kidney filtration. These internal and external poisons in our body generate symptoms of excessive fatigue, joint pain, memory loss, indigestion and diarrhea, and a myriad of allergenic reactions. However, ABC’s strong adsorbing ability can bind these toxins, and over time reduce this chronic toxic load on the body’s vital organs and tissues.
Charcoal has been used as a folk remedy for millennia, and is even rated as a Category 1 (safe and effective) remedy by the FDA for acute toxic poisoning. It is an excellent supplement to keep on hand in case of food poisoning, drug overdose, and as a general emergency antidote for virtually all toxic chemicals and poisons. This very therapeutic remedy has even been known to neutralize the free radicals created from excessive EMF exposure (computers, cell phones, transmission towers, etc.) and radiation (airplane flights, cat scans, x-rays, etc.)

Silicones are one family of materials that help meet changing consumer needs. They have been important ingredients in hair care products since the 1950s, first appearing in hair sprays to lubricate nozzles and help keep them from blocking. In the 1970s, the hair conditioning properties of silicones began to play a significant role in products such as colorants, permanents and conditioners. Because bleached hair is easily damaged, many products designed to treat it depend on the conditioning properties of silicones. Silicones first appeared in shampoos in the 1980s, and played a major role in the development of two-in-one shampoos in the 1990s.
Today, these versatile ingredients are available as fluids, emulsions, resins, elastomers, waxes and blends. Their long history of use in hair care is due to benefits such as conditioning, shine, manageability, improved wet and dry combing and reduced fly-away. The newest silicone technologies also offer heat and color protection, provide body, improve straightening and impart flexible styling properties. This article reviews some novel properties and traditional conditioning functions of silicone materials for hair care applications.
Multifunctional Conditioning Agents
Hair damage can result from a number of environmental and chemical factors. In addition, frequent use of hair dryers and heated curling or straightening appliances contributes significantly to hair damage. Frictional forces of shampooing, brushing, frequent washing, towel drying and hair ties, combined with poor general health and diet, can have a compounded effect on the level of hair damage and the resulting appearance and feel of hair.
Proper conditioning can help protect hair from further damage and maintain a more healthy appearance. While damaged hair typically requires intensive conditioning, normal hair may require only light conditioning. The chemical structure of silicones and addition of functionality allow for a variety of materials that can meet hair conditioning needs.
In addition to their role as conditioning agents, a number of silicone materials have multifunctional properties in hair care formulations. These materials range from basic cyclic or linear polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to polyether- and amino-based fluids and silicone resins. Figure 1 shows some of the families of silicone materials used in hair care applications and their functions.

Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride?
Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is a water-soluble, organic compound that is a quaternary ammonium derivative of guar (aka cluster beans). This means it is a substance whose chemical structure has four carbon groups attached to a positively charged nitrogen atom. While plant derived, there is a synthetic portion to it.
Why is it used?
Although a great conditioning agent for both skin and hair, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is especially beneficial as a hair care product. Because it is positively charged, or cationic, it neutralizes the negative charges on hair strands that cause hair to become static or tangled. Better yet, it does this without weighing hair down. With this ingredient, you can have silky, non-static hair that retains its volume.

very specific benefits. Most plant oils are extracted from the seed of the plant, but avocado oil is extracted from the flesh of the avocado. Most fruits are higher in carbohydrate and contain little or no fat, yet avocado is very high in beneficial fats.
Avocado is also unique because it contains more potassium than a banana and more protein and fats than any other fruit. Its meteoric rise in popularity can be compared to coconut oil’s surge in popularity, but nutritionally it resembles olive oil.
Nutrient Content of Avocado Oil
This lightly flavored oil is high in oleic acid, monounsaturated fats and Vitamins A, E and D. It contains decent amounts of magnesium and antioxidants, which most people do not consume enough of. It may also make other foods healthier:

Kokum butter is one of the most stable vegetable butters available in the market. It’s also one of the hardest. Another peculiar feature which makes it popular among formulators of cosmetic products is that Kokum butter remains in a solid state at room temperature, but melts immediately on contact with the skin. Its triglyceride composition is uniform, and consists of up to 80% of stearic-oleic-stearic (SOS) triglycerides
Did you know that ultra purified derivatives of Kokum butter are used as substitutes & stabilizers (CBS – Cocoa butter substitute) while manufacturing chocolates so the end product doesn’t melt during transport and sale in hot summer months.
Kokum butter benefits!
Kokum butter is more emollient than most butters, possesses natural healing properties, has a uniform triglyceride composition and promotes regeneration of skin. Fatty acid levels are low, indicating an absence of any powerful lipolytic activity. Kokum butter is meant to be used as an ingredient in cosmetic formulations. For external use only. Aforementioned benefits have been observed by studying centuries of holistic healing in local communities in India. Knowledge about usage and benefits has been gained over time and is purely experiential in nature.
Some of the traditionally known benefits of Kokum butter are as follows:

This is clear, colorless silicone adds a silky texture, luster and sheen without the oily residue. Known as a skin conditioner and an emollient. It evaporates quickly, making it an excellent carrier for perfume! Use at 1% to 5% in lotions, conditioners, and salves for a nice silky, non-greasy feel. To make a perfume mix 1 ounce of Cyclomethicone with 1/10 oz of fragrance or essential oil. Shake well and apply to skin.
Ingredients:
What is Cyclomethicone?
These days, most present-day commercial cosmetic products have a high chance of containing any form of Cyclomethicone. This compound is a clear, alcohol-free substance which is also odourless. Its main use in the cosmetic industry is best explained in terms of its emollient properties which are optimal when it comes to blending them with other different substances used to make cosmetics. The inclusion of this substance helps to give products a smoother texture, thus facilitating their subsequent absorption. There is something about the chemical composition of this substance that makes it fit to be used in beauty products. The molecules of the Cyclomethicone compound are larger than most other chemicals. Therefore, they do not penetrate into the pores so easily. This quality helps the substance to remain on the outer skin layers, creating a smoother and softer skin texture. In addition, its failure to penetrate diminishes the risks of any negative reaction to Cyclomethicone or any of the other chemicals used in the cosmetic product.
A Story to Tell:
Cyclomethicone was created sometime around the early 80s as an alternative to harsher skin emollient substances, such as petroleum-based solvents that began to be frowned upon because of their attack on the Ozone layer.
Later research would find that Cyclomethicone did not prevent the main active ingredients used in the beauty products from entering the skin, at all. Consequently, it was only natural that the substance would become a cosmetic favourite among labs and cosmetic manufacturers.
Cyclomethicone and its Benefits:
According to recent research, there are several advantages of using Cyclomethicone as a soothing agent: the most obvious one being its effect on the human skin. By humidifying and softening the external layers of the human dermis, this substance helps to improve overall skin appearance. People with dermatological issues are generally prescribed skincare products containing Cyclomethicone for this very reason. It is commonly found in hair conditioners, shampoos, nail cuticle treatments and the like.
In recent years, research has shown that this chemical compound is also helpful in dealing with skin ageing issues, mainly because of its alleged “filling” properties. One of the most popular products that is using this agent is facial lotions meant to deal with acne scars. Moreover, believed to possess a regenerative, soothing and restoring effect on the human skin, Cyclomethicone is now recommended to patients who have suffered from psoriasis.
Cyclomethicone and its Side Effects:
Despite its many benefits, cyclomethicone is also known to possess certain negative effects on the human skin. Even when it is recommended as being mostly non-comedogenic, this substance has been reported to cause skin irritation and negative reactions, such as rash, in people with sensitive skin.
In addition, patients who are under some kind of dermatological treatment that involves applying some kind of medicated topical treatment should check with a skin specialist first since Cyclomethicone is likely to affect the absorption of the prescribed lotion.
